His legacy will stand as a source of inspiration for future generations, and he will always be remembered for his unwavering integrity, timeless values, and the profound imprint he left behind.
NIKOLAOS M. STASSINOPOULOS
1932-2026
Nikolaos Stassinopoulos, a pioneer and visionary, was a strong pillar of Greek industry. Having led VIOHALCO for decades, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of VIOHALCO to this day, he not only laid solid foundations for its growth—steadily leading it to become one of Europe’s foremost metals processing groups—but also shaped the Greek industry of tomorrow, which has since gained global recognition.
Born in Athens in 1932, he was an outstanding student at Berzan High School and graduated from the Athens University of Economics and Business (formerly ASOEE) with high distinction.
He worked from an early age in the family businesses in various roles, facing the challenges of the post war period while actively contributing to the growth and international outlook of what was then the Hellenic Copper and Aluminium Industry S.A. In 1964, following the death of their father, Michael N. Stassinopoulos, he and his brother Evangelos assumed the leadership of VIOHALCO.
Nikolaos Stassinopoulos always looked ahead of his time. Possessing remarkable foresight and exceptional capabilities, he placed great emphasis on the human factor, as well as on business ethics and transparency of the highest standards. His intellectual acuity, combined with courage, vision, and steadfastness—and guided by strong moral principles, helped him pursue and further progress his father’s business.
He didn’t take long to realise that foreign markets and international partnerships were essential for the Group’s expansion. He developed an effective and agile business model, establishing VIOHALCO as a holding company and transferring all its production activities to subsidiary and affiliated companies. At the same time, with long term vision and dynamism, he kept the Group constantly alert and at the forefront of developments, planning strategic investments and consistently pursuing technological leadership across the production units.
By strengthening the export orientation of the companies, he promoted strategic collaborations with major international corporations. At the same time, aiming to produce innovative and high quality products for global markets, he invested in new technologies and expertise that enhanced competitiveness, creating an international network of technological partnerships.
A firm believer in the human element of entrepreneurship, he focused on the development of the companies’ employees, always standing by them and supporting them in meaningful ways.
Through persistent efforts, long term strategic planning, and sound business decisions, he steadily transformed VIOHALCO into a leading European metals processing group and Greece’s largest industrial exporting entity.
All these achievements, along with his confidence in Greek industry’s potential, and his support and contribution to the national economy, defined his exceptional entrepreneurial career.
Nikolaos Stassinopoulos also enjoyed seeing the next generation—his sons Michael and Ioannis—take over the leadership of this international Group, bringing renewed momentum and a modern spirit, yet always guided by the fundamental values of the founders.
As a mark of recognition for his contribution to the business world, Nikolaos Stassinopoulos was honoured in 2018 with the “IOBE Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research - Award of Excellence” for his pivotal role on the development of the Greek economy and society. Additionally, in 2019 he received the “Diolkos Award” from the Hellenic Marketing Academy for pioneering the outward orientation of Greek industry.
His contributions to cultural and social causes have also been duly acknowledged. Along with his mother, Marianthi, and his brother Evangelos, they founded— in memory of Michael N. Stassinopoulos— the “Michael N. Stassinopoulos – VIOHALCO Public Benefit Foundation”. Through the Foundation, later led by his wife, Alexandra Stassinopoulos, he left a multifaceted legacy to Tegea, Arcadia, the family’s place of origin.
