Environment and recycling

Viohalco companies are committed to an environmentally responsible operation and product development, through ongoing investments in advanced technological solutions and continuous employee training. They apply the Best Available Techniques (BAT) to reduce their environmental footprint and promote the sustainable use of natural resources across their manufacturing operations.
Respect for the environment is a priority for Viohalco companies and ongoing efforts are made to continuously improve their environmental performance. This commitment is realised in everyday operations, through the application of advanced abatement systems and environmental monitoring that ensure compliance with all international and national standards. Viohalco companies achieve a high level of environmental performance by investing in new infrastructure, and the implementation of environmental management programmes by dedicated personnel ensuring systematic mitigation of any environmental risks related to their activities. In this context, about 85% of production facilities have been certified according to ISO: 14001 or EMAS.

Viohalco companies are dedicated to reducing their environmental footprint and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources by recycling materials across their manufacturing operations. They also strive to play a significant role in society, particularly in education, regarding the responsible use and recycling of materials in everyday life.

In the aluminium segment, Elval is the largest aluminium recycler in Greece. The company, aiming to continuously minimize its environmental impact, has installed and operates two delacquering and melting furnaces employing several Best Available Techniques for energy recovery and emission minimization. This technology ensures that aluminium is recycled in an environmentally friendly process, using less energy, limiting waste and reducing atmospheric emissions, while at the same time increasing the capacity for recycled aluminium to be used as a raw material, thereby contributing to combat climate change.

Elval operates an aluminium can recycling centre, Canal in Athens that receives, separates and processes used aluminium cans. These cans are then forwarded to Elval’s plant in Oinofyta, where they are recycled and used to manufacture new products. Canal has a total annual capacity of 2,800 tons and is in operation for over twelve years. The facility also operates as an educational centre which teaches the importance of recycling and runs programs specially developed for schools and other social groups to promote environmentally responsible behaviour in daily life.

In the copper segment, Halcor implements an extensive plan to use as raw material recycled copper. Halcor has increased substantially its use of scrap by recycling large quantities of metal scrap, being the largest copper and copper alloys recycler in the Balkans. In this way, a significant contribution to the promotion of conditions for circular economy is achieved, with emphasis on conserving natural resources and energy. Copper recycling helps to save 85% of the energy required for primary copper production, and to reduce greenhouse air emissions by more than 75%.

In the steel segment, Sidenor, Stomana Industry and their steelmaking subsidiaries save 70-75% of the energy and 40% of the water required for primary steel production through steel scrap recycling. As one of the largest steel scrap recyclers in the Balkans, Sidenor understands the importance of recycling, and recycles the wastes and by-products of its production installations following the “zero-waste” industrial production target. These recycled items are then used to manufacture a series of new products. The recovery and recycling of the steelmaking residues is performed by a dedicated subsidiary company, Aeiforos.

In addition to the above, the Viohalco portfolio includes various companies dedicated to materials resourse recovery and waste management services.
